How to manually compute fractions?

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

  • Make sure the denominators are the same. If they are different, find a common denominator.
  • Add or subtract the numerators, while keeping the denominator the same.
  • Simplify the result by reducing the fraction if possible.

Example:

3⁄4+2⁄4=5⁄4 (Add numerators)

5⁄6−1⁄3 = 5⁄6−2⁄6 = 3⁄6 or 1⁄2 (Subtract numerators)

Multiplying Fractions

  • Multiply the numerators together.
  • Multiply the denominators together.
  • Simplify the result by reducing the fraction if possible.

Example:

3⁄5×2⁄3=(3×2)⁄(5×3)=6⁄15 or 2⁄5 (Multiply numerators and denominators)

Dividing Fractions

  • Keep the first fraction the same.
  • Change division to multiplication.
  • Flip the second fraction (take its reciprocal).
  • Multiply the numerators and denominators.
  • Simplify the result by reducing the fraction if possible.
