The Eagle Who Found the Lost Music – Short Story
Eagle Who Found the Lost Music
High above the whispering pines soared Aegis, a proud eagle with feathers the color of storm clouds. His keen eyes scanned the sprawling valley below, searching for prey. But today, a different glint caught his gaze – a shimmer amongst the green, unlike anything he’d seen before
Curiosity burning brighter than hunger, Aegis swooped down. Nestled amongst the ferns was a strange object – a small, leather-bound book, its pages shimmering with an ethereal glow. Tentatively, Aegis prodded it with his beak. As he did, a melody, sweet and sorrowful, filled the air. It was unlike any sound he’d ever heard, a melody that tugged at his heart.
He knew, somehow, that this was the “lost music” the elder eagles spoke of in hushed tones. Music that had once filled the valley with joy, driven away the shadows, but had vanished during a terrible storm years ago. Now, it was back, trapped within this strange book.
Aegis couldn’t read, of course, but the music resonated within him. He carried the book back to his aerie, a high, craggy peak overlooking the valley. There, he perched on a rock, the book clutched carefully between his talons. The melody continued, weaving a story of joy and sorrow, of hope and resilience. He closed his eyes, letting the music wash over him.
As days passed, Aegis became obsessed with the music. He spent hours with the book, listening, feeling the emotions it evoked. One day, while perched on a sun-drenched rock, a melody escaped his beak, a clumsy attempt at mimicking the song. He startled himself, but then continued, encouraged.
Day by day, his attempts grew more refined. He learned to pick out the notes, his powerful beak whistling the melody. Soon, the valley echoed with the music once more, carried on the wind carried by Aegis’ mighty wings.
The sound reached the ears of the animals below. Birds sang along, their voices blending with Aegis’ call. Squirrels peeked out of their burrows, their heads bobbing to the rhythm. Even the shy deer emerged from the forest, their eyes filled with wonder.
The lost music had returned, not from forgotten scrolls or dusty libraries, but from the heart of an eagle who had found beauty in something strange and shared it with the world. The valley once cloaked in sadness bloomed with joy, a testament to the power of music and the courage of a curious bird.
