How to manually compute fractions?
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
- Make sure the denominators are the same. If they are different, find a common denominator.
- Add or subtract the numerators, while keeping the denominator the same.
- Simplify the result by reducing the fraction if possible.
Example:
3⁄4+2⁄4=5⁄4 (Add numerators)
5⁄6−1⁄3 = 5⁄6−2⁄6 = 3⁄6 or 1⁄2 (Subtract numerators)
Multiplying Fractions
- Multiply the numerators together.
- Multiply the denominators together.
- Simplify the result by reducing the fraction if possible.
Example:
3⁄5×2⁄3=(3×2)⁄(5×3)=6⁄15 or 2⁄5 (Multiply numerators and denominators)
Dividing Fractions
- Keep the first fraction the same.
- Change division to multiplication.
- Flip the second fraction (take its reciprocal).
- Multiply the numerators and denominators.
- Simplify the result by reducing the fraction if possible.
Remember to always simplify your results by reducing fractions to their simplest form (e.g., by finding the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator).
